Behind The Scenes

Charlotte + Ross

Lake District

Choosing a great location is paramount, the session should be all about adventure!

Whether it be the black picturesque beaches of Iceland or the mountain tops of the Lake District your adventure session must be grand and epic with stunning vistas. Wide environmental portraits are key to showcasing the scene so it needs to be amazing. Think the top of Mount Snowdon, the splendour that is the Isle of Skye, peaks of continuous mountains from the summit of Skiddaw. The possibilities are endless. Let your imagination run a little and let’s see what we can come up with. Remember, a wedding photo of this magnitude is certainly rare and uncommon which is why they have such impact and beauty.

Usually for an adventure session this will differ greatly. The session may take a day of travel to reach the location, it may involve a stay over, depending on location above will affect the time. Lets take two examples.

Example One: The Isle of Skye. (3 Days + 2 days of editing = A 5 day shoot)

Friday – An 8-10 hour drive the day before the shoot, stay at accommodation or camping.

Saturday – Day of the session, plenty of adventure and awesome photographs.

Sunday – Drive home, another 8-10 hours.

Example Two: The Lake District. (1 Day + 2 Days of editing = A 3 day shoot)

Friday – Set off early morning to location, a 2-3 hour drive. Hike the fells to desired location and start the session, multiple locations can be used if discussed prior. Drive back the same day on the evening.

Usually wedding attire is placed into your rucksacks and slipped on when at location(s). There may be times where leaving the wedding attire on and walking works great for some in the moment type photographs, showcasing the adventure and the journey. Adventure sessions are well planned out with myself and you guys before we leave so don’t worry too much as all of this can be covered in person when making a final plan.

Hair down looks lovely and should you wish to wear hair down that’s fine by me, just be conscious of the wind at altitude, say up a mountain. Hair up can solve this problem and you don’t have to worry about distracting hairs coming across your face.

Make Up

Lets face it, the day of the session isn’t the time to be trying out a new look. Apply your make up in your usual way and how you feel comfortable. Bit off-topic but a good tip also. I recommend against going for a professional tan or intentionally tanning outdoors prior to your session. A fresh tan may look good in person, but the camera is more sensitive to skin tones and your natural colour is always more flattering in photographs.

What to bring and leave

As this is an adventure session, photos with your rucksacks etc are fine, so feel free to bring whatever you want as long as it fits in the rucksack. Generally when shooting your main photographs it will just be you two and nothing else.

Dogs + Kids

Im afraid this is a no. Kids especially, some of the locations are not best for children and the session is all about you two. I do offer family sessions should you wish to have a some family photographs. As far the dog – I love dogs but again, we are there to get the best photos possible and we don’t want to worry about the dog falling off a cliff for example.

As with any photo shoot, we need the weather on our side. Generally I will shoot the session as long as its not raining. My gear is weather sealed but I’m not taking the chance with over 15k worth of kit.

Anything Else

As above, when we have a final face to face meeting to discuss the plan, everything above will be ironed out and planned so try not to worry too much, the main thing is to decide on an epic location.
